Photoinduced water splitting with oxotitanium porphyrin: a computational study.

چکیده
The photochemistry of the hydrogen-bonded oxotitanium porphyrin-water complex (TiOP-H(2)O) has been explored with electronic-structure calculations. It is shown that intramolecular charge-transfer processes, which are initiated by the excitation of the Soret band of TiOP, accumulate electronic charge on the oxygen atom of TiOP, which in turn abstracts a hydrogen atom from water by an exoenergetic and essentially barrierless hydrogen-transfer reaction, resulting in the TiPOH˙-OH˙ biradical. About 75% of the absorbed photon energy is thus stored as chemical energy in two ground-state radicals. Absorption of a second photon by TiPOH˙ can result in the detachment of the H˙ radical and recovery of the photocatalyzer TiOP. Again, about 75% of the photon energy is stored in the dissociation energy of TiPOH˙. Overall, a water molecule is decomposed into H˙ and OH˙ radicals by the absorption of two visible photons. Exoenergetic radical recombination reactions can yield molecular hydrogen, molecular oxygen or hydrogen peroxide as closed-shell products.

Photoinduced oxidation of a water-soluble manganese(III) porphyrin.
The photoinduced oxidation of tetra(N-methyl-4-pyridyl)porphyrinmanganese(III) has been achieved in homogeneous solution. The manganese porphyrin was used as an electron donor in a three-component system with tris-(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) as the photosensitizer and chloropentaamminecobalt(III) as the electron acceptor. The photooxidized manganese porphyrin is unstable in aqueous solution,...
متن کاملEngaging Copper(III) Corrole as an Electron Acceptor: Photoinduced Charge Separation in Zinc Porphyrin-Copper Corrole Donor-Acceptor Conjugates.
An electron-deficient copper(III) corrole was utilized for the construction of donor-acceptor conjugates with zinc(II) porphyrin (ZnP) as a singlet excited state electron donor, and the occurrence of photoinduced charge separation was demonstrated by using transient pump-probe spectroscopic techniques. In these conjugates, the number of copper corrole units was varied from 1 to 2 or 4 units whi...
متن کاملCarbon nanotubes with covalently linked porphyrin antennae: photoinduced electron transfer.
Single- and multiwalled carbon nanotubes have been covalently functionalized with free-base porphyrin. The quantity of porphyrin linked to the surface was determined from thermogravimetric and UV-vis analysis. A reversible protonation equilibrium between the attached porphyrin and the residual acid groups of the carbon nanotubes has been identified. Steady-state fluorescence emission spectrum o...
متن کاملPhotodynamics in stable complexes composed of a zinc porphyrin tripod and pyridyl porphyrins assembled by multiple coordination bonds.
A tripod zinc porphyrin (TPZn(3)) forms a stable 1:1 complex with gold(III) tetra(4-pyridyl)porphyrin (AuTPyP(+)) and free-base tris(4-pyridyl)porphyrin (2H-Py(3)P) in nonpolar solvents. The strong binding of TPZn(3) with AuTPyP(+) or 2H-Py(3)P results from the encapsulation of AuTPyP(+) or 2H-Py(3)P inside the cavity of TPZn(3) through multiple coordination bonds, as indicated by UV-vis-NIR, E...
